obviously this thing was written a while ago. Better engines have come along. the artistic accomplishment of zpc hasn't been surpassed. I haven't built a map in a while, though I think about it. I don't ride open gl, so marathon still appeals.

with modeling / rendering and walk-through software and playing immersive games like myst and marathon. i've also checked out a couple of the lame-assed vrml things and quicktime vr (the best use of which i've seen being samples from the forthcoming hypnagogue).
i think the marathon engine is the best one. i've put a lot of hours into marathon beyond playing the game: designing maps, creating textures and animating characters. while admittedly trite, the game provides a compelling artificial three-d immersive experience.

THE THING I USE THE WEB FOR the most is to support my main obsessive use (outside of my design practice) of my computers. this homunculus is a three-d engine for a game called marathon; created and marketed by bungie software..
i haven't seen any of the DOS equivalents that i know are out there but i have stayed up way too late dinking
